Mock Draft - 1/10/04

With the Canes football season over and recruiting in the stretch run I have decided to get an early start on the NFL draft process. It seems every year UM has at least four players with first round potential. This year is no different with seniors Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, Vernon Carey, and the three underclassmen (Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow and Vince Wilfork) who have declared themselves eligible.

This will be a bi-weekly feature. So let's get in to it. Underclassmen are denoted by *.

1. Chargers: DT Tommie Harris, 6'3 290* Oklahoma
While some college football fans say Harris had hype on his side, his upside is tremendous. He is not the big plugger inside, but more of a true tackle with the ability to rush the passer as well as stop the run. The Chargers lacked a talent of Harris caliber up front.

2. Raiders: WR Larry Fitzgerald, 6'3 220* Pittsburgh
Fitzgerald may have been the best player in college last season. With Tim Brown and Jerry Rice on the tail end of their respective careers he would be a great complement for Jerry Porter. Fitzgerald is a high character player who must petitioned the NFL because he is a true sophomore even though he is 3 years removed from high school.

3. Cardinals: QB Ben Roethlisberger, 6'5 245* Miami (Ohio)
With Denny Green taking over in Arizona, the plan will most likely be to take the best offensive player on the board. Big Ben is a very talented QB with big-time upside although he is raw nonetheless.

4. Giants: OT Robert Gallery, 6'6 325 Iowa
The Giants lack of an O-line cost them plenty last season. They could not sustain a running game or pass block sufficiently. Gallery, like Eric Steinbach is the best O-Linemen in the draft and he projects as a Left Tackle.

5. Redskins: S Sean Taylor, 6'3 225* Miami
Taylor may be the most athletic player in the draft. With Gibbs taking over a team that has talent, but definitely has some dull spots. Taylor has linebacker size and cornerback speed and should be a pillar for the Skins for years.

6. Lions: TE Kellen Winslow, 6'5 235* Miami
Mikeal Ricks just is not the answer. Winslow follows in the line of past Cane TE's who have experienced NFL glory. Winslow has tremendous physical ability and a big-time mean streak.

7. Falcons: WR Roy Willams, 6'3 210 Texas
With Peerless Price in the fold the Legend gives the Birds some size. Williams can be a big-time WR and with Vick as the QB could take this team into the playoffs.

8. Browns: OL Shawn Andrews, 6'6 345* Arkansas
The Browns O-line is horrible. Andrews is a behemoth on the right side. He can definitely push the pile.

9. Jaguars: WR Reggie Williams, 6'4 225* Washington
Some question Williams' speed, but he makes up for it with strength and body control. The Jags need someone like him to keep the drive moving.

10. Texans: DE Will Smith, 6'3 270 Ohio St.
Smith is a quick pass rusher who spends most of his time behind the line of scrimmage. The Texans will most likely go defense and could pick up a linebacker.

11. Steelers: QB Eli Manning, 6'5 220 Ole Miss
12. Jets: LB Jonathan Vilma, 6'1 225 Miami
13. Bills: CB DeAngelo Hall, 5'11 205* Virginia Tech
14. Bears: RB Kevin Jones, 6'0 215* Virginia Tech
15. Bucs: DT Randy Starks, 6'4 300* Maryland
16. 49ers: WR Micheal Clayton, 6'4 190* LSU
17. Bengals: DT Vince Wilfork, 6'2 345* Miami
18. Saints: CB Chris Gamble, 6'2 185* Ohio St.
19. Vikings: LB DJ Williams, 6'2 240 Miami
20. Dolphins: C Ben Wilkerson, 6'4 305* LSU
21. Pats: RB Steven Jackson, 6'1 230* Oregon St.
22. Cowboys: LB Karlos Dansby, 6'4 235 Auburn
23. Seahawks: DE David Pollack, 6'2 275* Georgia
24. Broncos: TE Ben Troupe, 6'5 255 Florida
25. Packers: CB Will Poole, 5'10 185 USC
26. Panthers: CB Derrick Strait, 5'11 200 Oklahoma
27. Rams: DE Marquise Hill, 6'7 300* LSU
28. Titans: G/T Vernon Carey, 6'5 355 Miami
29. Colts: CB Dunta Robinson, 5'11 190 South Carolina
30. Chiefs: WR Lee Evans, 5'11 200 Wisconsin
31. Eagles: C Jake Grove, 6'4 305 Virginia Tech
32. Pats: DT Marcus Tubbs, 6'4 325 Texas
