UM Closing In On Commitment

Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade standout tight end Octavius Darby is growing tired of the recruiting process and believes he'll have a decision real soon. "I'm about done with it," Darby said.

"I'm going to UM this weekend with John (Dunlap) and I'll probably verbally commit to them on my visit. I'm pretty sure that's where I'll go. It'll either be them or N.C. State."

At 6-foot-2 1/2 and 222 pounds (as measured on Monday), Darby recently played in the CaliFlorida Bowl. Darby was the starting tight end.

"It was tight getting away to California for a week," he said. "The field was sloppy and everything. I hung out with Willie Young and some other guys."

Darby said he learned about the news of Rob Chudzinski heading to Cleveland earlier today.

"That's OK," he said. "They'll find someone to replace him. They're still UM. They're gonna have good tight ends."

Darby said he's under the impression that UM is recruiting two other players at his position.

"I ain't scared of anyone," he said. "It doesn't matter how many they wanna bring in. I know Dane Guthrie. They're trying to get a guy from Arizona (Zach Miller) to commit but I aint worried about him. He'll find out that it's a different brand of football down here."

The talented tight end prospect said he's already preparing for college.

"I quit basketball so I could start spending more time in the weight room getting ready for college," he said. "Kellen Winslow is leaving. They got Kevin Everett coming back and the transfer from Notre Dame. I guess it'll be them, me, Dane, and maybe the kid from Arizona. I wouldn't mind that at all. UM always gets their tight ends into the game."

Darby is a full academic qualifier.
