Boo-Birds Are Calling

Boo's rang out from among the 2,400 in attendance early in the second half, as Perry Clark's Hurricanes lost their tenth straight and fifth straight at home. The loss came to the Seton Hall Pirates, 76-66, on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center. Andre Barrett paced the balanced attack for the Pirates with 23 points and 4 assists.

Three other pirates, along with Barrett, scored in double figures. Kelly Whitney scored 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Marcus Toney-El netted 13 points with 5 rebounds, and John Allen added 10. Seton Hall had wide open jump shots to shoot all night, to go along with lay-ups. Whenever the opportunity arose, they converted. The Pirates shot 55% from the field as a team. Andre Barrett was 9-12 from the field, including 3-4 from three point land.

When watching Miami basketball as of late, the second halves of games all seem to be following the same pattern. Get down double digits in the second half, make a run to close within single digits, and then run out of steam, only to close the game with a double digit loss. Tonight went no differently. Trailing by seven at the half, Miami put up nearly no effort at all, as Seton Hall stretched their lead to 52-38. The Hurricanes then re-grouped, got some life in their systems, and cut the lead to 66-61, with just under four minutes to go. Unable to convert down the stretch, Miami was outscored 10-5 the rest of the way.

Darius Rice returned to the line-up for Miami tonight, after missing the previous two games with a foot injury. Darius played well, scoring a team high 19 points. Robert Hite was the only other Hurricane to reach double figures. He scored 18 points but was only 6-17 from the floor. Anthony King saw limited action for Miami tonight, but when he was on the floor, he made things happen. In King's nine minutes, he was able to contribute 5 points to go along with 5 rebounds.

The whole night wasn't ugly for the Canes as they flaunted stylish head bands for the first half, as well as playing good ball for the first ten minutes of the game. The Canes were able to jump out to an 11-5 lead, and maintained the lead for the first quarter of the game. Andre Barrett knocked down a three pointer with 10:01 in the half to give the Hall a 19-16 lead, and the Pirates wouldn't trail again the remainder of the night.

Only one scenario remains for Miami to make the Big East Tournament: they must win out and Virginia Tech must lose out. Miami will try again for a victory on Saturday, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Wildcats of Villanova. These two met back on January 25th in Miami; Villanova was victorious 76-69. A 7:30 tip is scheduled for the affair. Joe Zagacki and Josh Darrow will have the play by play on WQAM 560 in Miami. ESPN Full Court will be the only television coverage available.
