LB Plans to Camp at UM

The University of Miami went into Washington, D.C. last recruiting season and unsuccessfully recruited wide receiver Doug Dutch down to the wire. They may soon be back, this time for linebacker Rico McCoy of St. Johns College High School.

At 6-foot-1 and 212 pounds, McCoy is coming off an outstanding junior season. He finished the year with 120 tackles, three caused fumbles, and five sacks before being named first team All-League.

"It was alright," McCoy said of last season. "We started 6-0 as a team but then finished up just 6-4 because we kinda fell apart late in the season. I made plays all year though and I'm happy with the way I played."

The talented linebacker has been playing the game since he was eight years old and is now one of the top players in the DC area.

"I feel like I'm the best player on the field," he said. "My number one goal this season is to play in the All-American game so people from all over the United States can see how I play."

McCoy, who claims a 4.55/40 time, began practicing for spring track on Monday and plans on doing that throughout the spring. He carries a 2.7 GPA inside the classroom.

"I have three offers from colleges right now," he said. "Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Maryland have already offered me. I'm also getting a lot of interest from Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, West Virginia, and teams like that."

McCoy said he's not ready to name a favorite because he wants to check out some of his top choices on visits.

"I definitely plan on taking all of my visits," he said. "If I had to pick five right now, they'd be to Maryland, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Miami, and probably Virginia or West Virginia."

Because McCoy believes he's one of the best linebackers out there, he plans to prove it at some camps this summer.

"I plan on being at the Miami camp," he said. "I'm going down there because I know that's where the competition will be. I know that if I'm one of the best linebackers there, that'll really help me out in getting a scholarship from teams like that."

McCoy has already met and spoken to some head coaches of schools he's currently considering.

"I've met Coach Pasqualoni, I've met Fridge (Maryland), Walt Harris is the man at Pitt," he said. "I'll start talking to those guys again when they can start calling on the phone."
