For the first time in school history, the University of Miami soccer team landed three players on the All-Big East team as senior Deidre Bass, sophomore Vonda Matthews and freshman Britney Butcher all received the distinction.

Bass, who started all 19 matches for the Hurricanes this season, was named to the All-Big East second team. Bass totaled 10 points for the Hurricanes, this season including four goals and two assists.

Matthews made the All-Big East second team for the second consecutive season after playing all 19 matches and finishing the season as the Hurricanes third leading scorer. Matthews, who had 15 points, scored six goals and three assists.

Butcher, named to the All-Big East Rookie Team, led the Hurricanes in scoring with eight goals and eight assists. She finished the regular-season with 24 points.

Miami (10-8-1, 3-2-1 in the Big East) will have to wait a few days to find out if they will be moving on to the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team bracket will be announced Monday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m.

Three baseball players selected Pre-season All-Americans

Shortstop Javy Rodriguez, and relievers George Huguet and Luke DeBold were named to the third annual Pre-season All-America Team, announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Rodriguez and Huguet were each named to the first-team, while DeBold was a second-team selection.

Rodriguez led the nation last season with a school-record 66 stolen bases and posted a team-high .382 batting average. Rodriguez had 10-game winning hits as well.

Huguet set a freshman school record last year with 14 saves in appearances and was named the team's rookie of the year. Huguet appeared in the first three games of the 2001 College World Series, pitching 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball. He held opponents to a .182 batting average.

DeBold's 1.74 ERA last season was second lowest on the pitching staff as he recorded 67 strikeouts.

Women's Tennis host Fall Classic

The Hurricanes women's tennis team will host the second annual UM Fall Classic this weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Teams participating in the tournament include Florida Atlantic, Florida International and South Alabama.

The format will consist of a hidden dual match play with individual results recorded. Matches will start at 9:30 a.m. each day.

UM women play final preseason basketball game

The Hurricanes women basketball team will take on the University of Virgin Islands All-Star team, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game in the Knights Sports Complex. Admission is free.
