Spring Practice Report - 4/5/04

The Hurricanes enjoyed two days off from practice after the scrimmage Friday night in Fort Lauderdale that was open to the public. Today the team returned to Greentree Practice Fields in shells. The team only has five more practices before the spring game on April 17 at the Orange Bowl.

Coach Larry Coker

"We would like to keep Devin Hester where he is and not move him around, especially because he is a young player. Now when you move him around to the Z, the X, and the H receiver he has to learn all of those things."

"What I have seen from Darnell Jenkins is that he has learned how to work. He has matured and will eventually be a very good receiver for us. Speed has not been the problem with Jenkins, Hester, Akieem Jolla, and Roscoe Parrish. You have to translate that to be a great receiver. I think he will be a great receiver for us. He is tough and he likes to play."

"I don't know if anybody in particularly stood out today. I though Roger McIntosh did awfully well as a linebacker today. He played a little bit of middle linebacker today, which was good. We have to have some flexibility there since we are thin in that area. Kelly Jennings was outstanding in the secondary today."

* Devin Hester has been moved to the ‘Z' receiver. The ‘Z' receiver is designed to catch short passes and is off the ball when lining up. Hester had previously been the ‘X' receiver.

* Bryan Pata practiced today, but was not full go because of his ankle. He did some sled work and didn't get in on any team situations. Pata should be able to practice on Thursday.

* Roscoe Parrish will have surgery this week, but no date has been set yet. He was at practice working on his hands taking passes from coaches and players.

* Glenn Cook blocked a field goal today. Cook picked up where he left off after a solid performance on Friday at the scrimmage in Fort Lauderdale. He recorded eight tackles on the night and has settled in nicely at strongside linebacker.

* Tyler McMeans did some work today as a center during quarterback-center exchanges at the beginning of practices. McMeans returned to right tackle in team situations, a position he has played at this spring.

* Jon Beason did not have a number on his practice jersey on Friday night because his equipment was left in the locker room by the equipment staff. No worries though, his #2 jersey was just fine and was in full use today.

* Brandon Meriweather sported a new look with small twists on the top of his head. He has also added a visor to his helmet this season similar to what safeties Sean Taylor and Maurice Sikes wore last year.
