QB Camping at UM

Carlton Hill was on his way to Miami this afternoon and he sounded very excited. "I'm headed down to Miami for a few days for their camp," Hill said. "I'm real excited about it because I know there will be good competition and some nice receivers to throw the ball to."

Hill, 6-3 and 210 pounds, is one of the top quarterback prospects in the state of Florida. The talented signal-caller is coming off two excellent seasons in a row. As a sophomore at Rickards High, he threw for over 1,500 yards and nine touchdowns. Then at Jefferson Co., his current school, he threw for 1,627 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior.

"I have a strong arm and everything but I can also beat you with my running," he said. "I feel like I'm a dangerous quarterback because I can do so many things back there."

Hill is coming off a solid spring and plans on leading his team to a big year in 2004.

"We're definitely gonna get back into the playoffs but we're trying to take this thing all the way to the state game," he said. "I think we have the team to do it."

Hill, who already has a qualifying test score, also plays basketball and runs track. His 22.14 time in the 200m was the 1A state champ in Florida this year. "I'm trying to win two state titles as a senior," he said, referring to track and football.

The talented rising senior has been getting lots of interest from college coaches. He has a number of scholarship offers and hopes to impress the UM coaches this weekend.

"I wanna go show them what I can do for a couple days," he said. "Plus it'll give me a chance to check out the school and the area. I like Miami but I don't wanna play another position. I am a quarterback. I gotta see if they really want me as a quarterback."

Hill remains wide open with the recruiting process but two schools currently stand out to him.

"I really like South Florida and Auburn," he said. "They have offered me as a quarterback and I'm real interested in both of them right now."

The Hurricanes will try to impress Hill over the next few days.

"If I was going (to college) for another position, I'd probably say Miami's right there too but I wanna show them that I can play quarterback there too."

Stay tuned for a follow-up report on Hill, and all the major prospects, after the camp.
