At 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, Gonzalez is an excellent athlete for his size. He's been playing on the defensive side of the ball for the last two seasons. He finished 26-6 as a heavyweight wrestler in Dade County this past winter. And at the MSL Combine in April, Gonzalez put on a nice athletic display -- which included a 34-inch vertical jump.
"I really dont know what makes me different except that I think I can work harder than most guys," Gonzalez said. "I come to work. And now that I've been moved to offense, I really am gonna have to work hard to make sure I learn everything I need to know before the season."
Gonzalez finished last season with just 24 tackles and four sacks because his season was cut shot at the midway point in the season.
"This one guy couldn't block me and so he went for my knees on one play and I got hurt," he said. "He caught my knee going the wrong way or something. All I know is that it hurt and I missed some games."
Gonzalez played both ways this spring but projects as a left tackle at the college level. Several college coaches have caught on.
"I saw a lot of coaches stopping by to see us practice or whatever," he said. "Some of them even called my house. I talked to some of them about going to camps. I got Kentucky then Auburn then FAU and then UCF. I wanna try to go to FSU's camp too."
Another coach he had a chance to talk to this spring was UM's Art Kehoe.
"He just said how he likes my frame and that he'd like to have the chance to work with me, to see what I got," he said. "He wanted me to come to camp but I was at Auburn's camp at that time instead."
Gonzalez, who doesn't have any scholarship offers yet, said other linemen already on the roster won't affect his decision.
"I don't care where I go," he said. "It's a free education, I know that. I'm more worried about that than I am about what other linemen are on the team."
