UM Lands 2nd Commitment

Bruce Johnson wanted to keep the family connection going. His uncle, Kelly Jennings, is a current starter on the Hurricane defense. Johnson said he plans to be one someday. He committed to the Hurricanes on Thursday.

"I really liked all the coaches that I had a chance to work with at the camp," Johnson said. "I had a great time. The competition was good and I know it's going to be at Miami."

Johnson, 5-11 and 175 pounds, plays on both sides of the ball at Suwannee Co. He becomes UM's second commitment after Martellus Bennett picked the Canes last month.

"I can't go wrong with Miami," he said. "It's a great program, great tradition. They put guys into the NFL and hopefully I'll be able to be there someday."

Johnson picked the Canes over FSU and Clemson. He's a full academic qualifier. Bruce Johnson went into detail about his commitment to the Hurricanes.

"When I had left the camp they said they would be sending me a scholarship offer in the mail," Johnson said. "I called down there just to talk to Coach Shannon and he was telling me about some of the DBs they wanted."

Johnson said as soon as Shannon began talking about him, he interrupted the coach to inform him of the news.

"I was like, 'Coach," he said. "You can count me in as a commitment. I'm coming. He was real happy and I ended up talking to Coach Coker, Coach Swasey, Coach Walton, and Coach CJ. I was real excited talking to all those guys."

Johnson said he doesn't care who the Hurricanes signed last year and who else they might be recruiting this year.

"I told them it doesn't matter," he said. "I'm coming and I'm gonna be working hard. Those other guys better be ready. Coach CJ didn't really say anything about playing right away but just said to keep working hard and everything."

Johnson is UM's second commitment, joining Texas tight end Martellus Bennett.
