Jeff Owens wanted to attend UM's summer camp but was unable to at the last minute. "I wasn't able to make it down there," the Plantation defensive tackle said. "I did go up to NC State's camp though. I won the Defensive MVP award for the whole camp. I was showing all those boys a few things."

Owens, 6-1 and 270 pounds, now plans on attending the Georgia camp on July 9. In addition, he's coming off a strong spring.

"I placed in the shot and discus this year," he said. "I threw the shot 53-10 and the disc 155. I told Ricky Jean-Francois that I'm gonna get him next year. We also won our spring jamboree 13-6. The defense was shuttin it down."

Owens, an All-State pick from a year ago who plans on taking the SAT in September, received several May recruiting calls.

"A bunch of people came and called," he said. "I like a few more than the rest. My top three or four would be Miami, Florida State, Georgia, and Oklahoma. They all called and talked to me."

Owens said he enjoyed talking to UM coach Greg Mark.

"He was telling me they're looking for a couple defensive tackles and I'm one of the ones they like," he said. "I know they're trying to get a kid from Georgia named Brandon (Perry). I know they like him."

The talented lineman said there's a lot to like about the Canes.

"UM, they have everything," he said. "It's close to home and they produce. Look at the guys they put into the league every year. That's where it's at, where I wanna be and UM will help me get there."

Owens said he's been working hard as he prepares for his senior season.

"I've been hitting the weight room hard," he said. "I wanna get 20 sacks this year. That's my goal and then catch Ricky (in track season). I think I can do both of those things."
