Brad Sellers, from Bowie High in Arlington, Texas, committed to the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech this past Saturday at camp. Brad will enter Georgia Tech in the fall as a Defensive End. He says, "It's possible I could move to the inside down the road if I gain another 20 pounds or so, but for now I'll play on the outside." Brad says he weighed in at 247 pounds at the GT camp.

Sellers is also a track & field star for Bowie. Last year he finished 4th place in the state for the discus (also does shot put). The three ahead of him were all seniors, so he expects to be a favorite this year.

Brad was recruited by a trio of GT coaches. Chan Gailey, Curtis Modkins, and Giff Smith were the ones to close the deal with Brad. Modkins recruits the state of Texas while Giff will by Brad's position coach at Tech.

Duke and Toledo were the others schools besides GT to officially offer Brad. Miami also courted Brad and were planning to look at him further this fall. Also Brad says, "Oklahoma State recruited me too but they wanted me to play Center. But that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted to play defense."

The Bowie football team was 4-6 last year but expects to improve this season. Brad told me that they realigned his division, so their schedule will look a little different this season, so there will be some unknowns on the schedule. One team they added to the schedule is DeSoto high which has several other prospects Brad says that GT is looking at like Michael Thomas, Corey Hall, and Brian Jackson. Brad looks forward to playing against the stacked team from DeSoto. Georgia Tech landed Elris Anyaibe from DeSoto last season, so our coaches are very familiar with that area. Brad said he didn't get to play against Anyaibe but knew him and competed against him in track & field last season. Sellers hopes to help recruit some of those guys to also come to Tech.

So what did Brad like about GT's reputation? He says, "Georgia Tech has good academics and they have played in 7 straight bowl games." "I like the coaches a lot and the facilities are very nice. I got to visit the equipment room and it was really nice too. I also got to see a lot of the stuff the players got as gifts for going to the last bowl game." Brad let me in on another point that our coaches are selling to the recruits. He says that Coach Gailey told him that the average salary for guys graduating from the football team going into the "real world" was between $55,000 and $60,000. He couldn't remember the exact number but was impressed with the fact. That way he knows that his education will get him a good job with good money if football can't.

Brad has already met several of the players at Tech. He spent some time with some of the other guys from Texas like Eddy Parker, Matt Rhodes & Nick Moore.

I also liked Brad's take on the ACC expansion. He said, "With Miami and the others in the ACC now, the competition has been raised up a notch. You have to play your best week in and week out and there will be no off-weeks. If you start to slack off then you're going to get whooped up on in this league." Brad will see GT take on Miami for the first time as conference foes in person. "I plan on being at Tech for the Miami game and then again for my official visit after my football season is over."

Brad should be a welcome addition to Georgia Tech and brings much needed help to the depth of our Defensive Ends.
