DB Plans to Visit UM

Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland standout defensive back Avery Atkins is widely considered one of the state's top defensive back prospects.

"I'm real versatile," Atkins said. "I can play on offense or defense. I like playing defense because I'd rather be hitting people than getting hit. I can cover because of my speed and get physical."

At 5-11 and 185 pounds, Atkins is coming off an excellent junior season as he helped lead his team to its first ever state title.

"We're back working hard again this summer trying to make sure we're in position to make another run," he said. "I'm a senior now so I'm trying to be one of the leaders out there."

The talented defensive back had a chance to attend the University of Florida camp earlier this month. He talked about that.

"They had some good receivers out there but I was able to shut them down," he said. "They had some real good DBs. My boy Morley is real good. I like him, the way he plays. We talked about playing over there together. Florida's nice, I like it there."

Atkins, who is currently committed to the Gators, said he's still interested in looking around. He's actually at LSU right now on an unofficial visit.

"I'd still like to take other visits just to make sure," he said. "I like LSU a lot. The coach recruiting me is real cool, I've known him for awhile. Florida State is nice too. I'm real comfortable there. And Miami's in there too. The way they produce players and win, you gotta like that. Those are some of the ones I'm still interested in as well."
