UM Football Notes

Three starters on the University of Miami football team, including all-American senior offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie, had arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday, Dec. 3, but are all expected to play in the Rose Bowl national championship game Jan. 3.

Senior linebacker Chris Campbell and junior defensive tackle William Joseph underwent minor surgeries to clean out loose cartilage.

McKinnie, 6-9 and 335 pounds, had bone chips removed from his left knee and also had loose cartilage cleaned out. McKinnie was injured during the Hurricanes 26-24 victory last Saturday when Virginia Tech defensive end Cols Colas was thrown into McKinnie on a running play.

University of Miami head coach Larry Coker said that McKinnie would probably miss some practice next week, although he isn't concerned about McKinnie missing the national title game.

"Bryant is doing fine," Coker said. "He probably couldn't play if the game were being played on Saturday, but with a few weeks of rest I don't see a problem."

Campbell and Joseph are part of a UM defense that has allowed 14 points in the last 12 quarters. Joseph has a team-leading 10 sacks and four forced fumbles. Joseph also has 19 tackles for losses. Joseph has 59 tackles, while Campbell has 63.

The Hurricanes will resume practice on Dec. 13 after taking this week off because of final exams.

ROMBERG A FINALIST: UM junior Brett Romberg was named one of five finalist for the Dave Rimington Award Trophy, given to the nation's premier college football center.

Romberg, a native of Ontario, Canada, is completing his second season as a starter on an offensive-line that has allowed four quarterback sacks all season. Miami has set school records for scoring each of the last two seasons, scoring 469 last year and 475 so far this season.

Joining Romberg as finalist for the award are Lecharles Bentley (Ohio State), Mel Fowler (Maryland), Kyle Young (Clemson) and Seth McKinney (Texas A&M). The winner will be announced in a presentation on Dec. 15 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

CANES STUFF: All Sports, a UM apparel shop near campus, has begun selling a variety of merchandise for the game. The store has a wide selection of Rose Bowl hats and shirts available.
