Meet Calais Campbell

The University of Miami rarely recruits the state of Colorado but for them to do that it must be a special player. Calais Campbell is just that. At 6-8 and 235 pounds Campbell will begin his college career at defensive end.

Q: You were a guy that committed early in the process, what is like to finally be here?
A: I came in this weekend—about two days ago. It is lovely to be here. It is hard to believe that I am leaving home. I grew up with five brothers and two sisters. I feel like a family man moving far away from my family since they are still in Colorado. It is hard to believe that I am going to be in college and on my own at the best team in the nation.

Q: You played defensive end and tight end in high school, what position will you start at in college?
A: I am going to start at defensive end, but I can move to tight end if they need me to. Actually I like defense more.

Q: What is your background in basketball and do you have any ambitions to play for coach Haith?
A: I played basketball in high school and was on a pretty good summer traveling team--the Hawks—so I had a lot of coaches look at me to play college ball. I told everybody right away that I was a football player. On my visit coach said that I could probably play if I wanted to. I am considering it, but I need to get a little bit bigger first. I am going to try football first.

Q: What attracted you to Miami?
A: I just want to play for a team that has the tradition that Miami has. Larry Coker is a great coach and I loved my visit—it was great.

Q: The weather in South Florida is different than in Colorado at this time of year, do you expect the adjustment to be easy?
A: It is a little different than in Colorado, but I think I can adjust to it. I think the weather will be a factor, but in a couple weeks I think I will be adjusted to it. It is pretty hot out there and dry.

Q: Have you met your roommate James Bryant?
A: I haven't got to know him too much yet. From what I have seen from his stats is that he is a really good player. He is star from Pennsylvania. From what I have heard from the other guys is that James is a pretty fun guy so hopefully I can be pretty cool with him.

Q: Did you request number 81 or was it given to you?
A: It was given to me. I didn't think I would have a star's (Kellen Winslow) number. I told my brother that a lot of people will be wearing my jersey (laughing).

Q: Do you have a favorite NFL player?
A: Jason Taylor is my favorite player and he is a tall guy like myself playing defensive end.
