LB Plans to Visit UM

Jon Demps has been hitting the weights hard this summer. It's now starting to show. "I'm up to about 225 (pounds) now," Demps said. "The last time you saw me I was 210. All the time in the weightroom this summer really paid off I guess."

Demps, a 6-4 linebacker from Pensacola Washington, began practicing with his team yesterday. He's excited for the season to start.

"We've put in a lot of work this summer and everyone has been carrying around a positive attitude," he said. "We need to keep that going because we have a good senior class and I think we can do some nice things. I'm just trying to help my team win whatever ways I can."

The talented linebacker, who made over 100 stops while weighing around 190 pounds as a junior, has been getting major recruiting attention.

"All the schools I'm looking at right now have offered me a scholarship and they're all doing the little things to stay in touch," he said. "I get a lot of handwritten mail and things like that."

Demps currently lists six schools among his favorites and says five of them will get official visits.

"Right now it's LSU, Florida State, Miami, and Florida for the first four," he said. "My fifth one is between either Maryland or Central Florida. I'm not sure yet."

Demps went to camps at LSU and FSU in recent months and talked about those experiences.

"I had a good time at both," he said. "My brother's at LSU. Everyone asks me all the time about following him up there. I love him to death but he's told me plenty of times to do what's best for me, to go where I feel most comfortable. I really like LSU right now though. Florida State's close to home, only about two and a half hours and I get along with the coaches really well. Miami, I've always liked the Hurricanes and I will definitely take a visit there to see more of them. My coach is trying to set something up where we can make it down for the Miami/Florida State game on Labor Day."
