DT Prospect Favors UM

Plantation, Fla. standout defensive tackle Jeff Owens has gotten off to an excellent start this season. "It's my senior year so it's time to show out," Owens said. "We're on a mission to win the state title and I'm a key piece. I've been dominating everyone out there. We're 2-0 too."

Owens, 6-1 and 270 pounds, said he recalls his team's game against Western from earlier this season.

"Before the game their O-Linemen were telling me that I was overrated and that I ain't gonna be able to do nothing against them," he said. "I was just laughing at them because I knew what I was gonna do to them. Well, the game starts and right away, it's obvious they can't touch me. Double teams, it didn't matter. I was telling them before the plays, 'You can't block me' and they were having a hard time. I had a couple sacks, some fumbles, and was in their backfield the whole time."

Owens says he currently has four sacks, one caused fumble, and one fumble recovery on the season. He expects the dominance to continue.

"I seriously don't think there's anyone in Broward County that can block me," he said. "I'll prove it too. I don't think these guys are on my level, unless the Miami Hurricanes came to town."

Speaking of the Hurricanes, Owens went into town for their game against La. Tech last weekend.

"It was a good game," he said. "Miami's defense is sick. They're unstoppable. Only Miami can lose four first round draft picks on defense and come back the next year even better. It's amazing. It's the competition that separates those guys. The backups coming up are just as good as the guys who left after starting for a few years. That's a program."

The talented defensive lineman is considering some other programs as well.

"I'm looking at UM, Florida State, Oklahoma, Georgia, and NC State," he said. "I'll take my visits after the season. They're calling every week. I like talking to Greg Mark from Miami, I talk to him a lot. I talked to Larry Coker at the game on Saturday. He was just telling me that I have a scholarship and that I'd fit in well there. I think so too."

Owens said his top two choices heading into the season were UM and FSU. That changed after September 10.

"It's Miami now," he said. "They have bragging rights now. Their defense is killing people. That's something I'd love to be a part of but I still wanna check out some of those other schools on my visits."

According to Owens, UM's depth chart at defensive tackle is also working in its favor.

"I was checking out their depth chart at defensive tackle and they're probably gonna lose their two major guys," he said. "Santonio Thomas is graduating and they're saying Orien Harris could leave for the NFL. The other guys who are playing, like my boy Teraz (McCray) are still young and I think I can compete with those guys right away."
