Pat Watkins Interview

Pat Watkins is one of the state's top DB prospects and he's narrowed things down to three. He goes indepth about why he's strongly considering the Hurricanes. We have the entire interview, as I had the chance to talk to him after to the Cali-Florida bowl last Wednesday.

I had the opportunity to talk to Tallahassee (Lincoln) standout safety Pat Watkins while prior to and after the Cali-Florida bowl last Wednesday.

Watkins was recovering from having his knee scoped, which prevented him from playing in this game or any other all star game this year. He said his knee is fine, however.

"It's pretty much down to Miami, Georgia, and Florida State," he said. "I'm also trying to set up a trip to Southern Cal for later this month."

At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Watkins is scheduled to visit UGA this weekend, followed by Miami on the 18th, then Southern Cal on the 25th. "I may not visit Florida State since I live right there and I know what it's about."

Watkins offered some insights into his three favorites.

"Florida State is the local school and I have a lot of friends going there," he said. "My best friend (Mike Gilliam) goes to Georgia and I really like their coaching staff. But I love the Hurricanes. They're my favorite team and always have been. I grew up a Canes fan and it's a dream to play for the Hurricanes someday. I'm just worried they might be taking too many defensive backs."

Watkins will make his visit to UM along with teammate Greg Threat and possibly teammate Gavin Dickey.

Personally, I was real surprised when he said that about UM's recruiting efforts at defensive back. It sounds to me like someone is feeding him mis-information. However, it won't matter because that will all get squared away when he comes to UM for his visit later this month. I still think FSU is going to be tough to beat, much like Cro Thorpe last season when he wanted to come to UM, but hometown pressure kept him at FSU. Perhaps Watkins will break that trend and make his own decision.
