UM Coaches Visit Top Recruit

Gabe McKenzie has spent the last few weeks trying to narrow down his list of college favorites. It appears he has three finalists. "I got three visits -- Alabama on the 7th (of January), Auburn on the 14th, and then Miami on the 21st," McKenzie said. "It's pretty much out of those three."

Although Bama is close to home and sent head coach Mike Shula for an in-home visit recently, McKenzie says it's Auburn and Miami at the top of his list.

"Basically, Auburn is right ahead of Miami right now," he said. "That's now. Things can change. I'm really looking forward to taking my visits so I can sit down and make a final decision."

McKenzie, 6-3 and 215 pounds, had assistant coaches from both programs in for visits this past week.

"The running backs coach and the tight ends coach from Miami have been here," he said. "They're both real cool. I really like Coach Cristobal. He's a real cool guy and I could see myself playing for him."

The talented tight end prospect, a full academic qualifier, said there's a lot to like about the Hurricanes.

"It's a tight ends factory there, the coach is real cool, and they're losing one of their two tight ends, Kevin Everett," he said. "Greg Olsen's coming back and that's it for now. They need to bring in some guys who can play right away. They're trying to get me and the dude from Texas (Martellus Bennett)."

McKenzie believes a combination of him and Bennett would be ideal.

"He's a great player but a different kind," he said. "He's like 6-7 and 250 so I think we're a little different from each other. I'd like the competition."

McKenzie then talked more about the Tigers.

"Their starter will be a senior next year but he's a big guy who is used as a blocker mostly," he said. "They're close to home and I've been following them pretty closely for awhile now."

McKenzie said he is expecting in-home visits soon from coaches Tommy Tuberville and Larry Coker.

"I'm enjoying talking to them and everything but my visits will be real important too," he said.
