Shaw Backs Out

Oceanside (Calif.) QB Derek Shaw (6-3, 200, 4.8,'s #11 QB, 4 stars) has decided not to follow through with his commitment to Miami, according to his grandfather and former Oregon coach Dick Enright.

"Derek was coming back from the Fla/Calif All-Star game and he decided that Miami was just too far away for him. He wants to be near his family and it's just too far away. I think this early commitment stuff is a bad thing. It's easy to make a mistake when you are that young," said Enright.

"Coach (Larry) Coker was just here four nights ago and Derek told him that he didn't think he could go to Miami. Coker was very disappointed and tried to talk him back into it, talking about Ken Dorsey and how he did it.

"But Derek called the Miami coaches the next day and also emailed them, telling them again that he's not going to Miami. They said they would continue to recruit him.

"Even Steve Spurrier has talked with him about coming out to South Carolina, but it's just too far away.

"Derek has been in touch with Arizona State and he's gonna take a hard look there. They were never lower than number two on his list at any time and they are still very interested. I think they still have an offer out to him and he's going up there for a visit to the school this weekend (1/15). He'll be going alone.

"ASU has really always been my favorite and I think Derek will make a decision real fast. He might decide to go there this weekend. I know he really likes their situation and the location and how they develop their QBs."
