Derron Thomas Q&A

Derron Thomas is one of three running backs in the 2004 class at Miami. Last year he redshirted and participated on the scout team. This spring he is looking forward to showing what he can do and earn carries for the 2005 season.

How was it redshirting and being on the scout team?

Scout team went real good. It was good to get the defense ready each week and also work on our game a little bit. It was good learning different things, getting better, and working hard.

Can you describe your injury and how it happened?

I rolled my ankle on the back of one of our offensive lineman. I was out about 2-3 weeks and I missed practices. It feels fine right now.

What are some differences you noticed in college than from high school?

You have to be patient and wait for blocks. You have to be more disciplined and keep fighting for each yard. It is important to get bigger and stronger all of the time.

How has your experience been at Miami and has it been what you expected?

It has been good. It is what I expected—all work and good competition. There are a lot of running backs competing for carries.

Has anything caught you off-guard or has anyone been better than you thought they would be?

Not really, I knew everyone was going to be good when I came in.

How is the relationship with you and the other running backs you came in with, Charlie Jones and Andrew Johnson?

We are all real good friends. Charlie and I are together all of the time. We just compete on the field all of the time at 100 percent.

Other than the running backs, how did the rest of the scout team develop?

Everybody else came along well too. The offensive line got better as the weeks went on. Kirby got a lot better and the receivers were catching balls.

Are you excited about spring practices?

Yes I am. It will be good to get back out there and compete.

Currently you wear number 36, are you interested in a new number?

Yeah possibly. I want a number in the 20's or lower, but we'll see. I might just stick with number 36.
