Miami Returns The Favor

Miami scored in the final seconds to beat UConn 68-66. Just one month ago Connecticut defeated Miami, 76-75, on January 5 on a pair of free throws by Johnnie Selvie with five seconds left. The rematch featured nine lead changes and four ties in the final seven minutes.

Elton Tyler's dunk with 11 seconds remaining lifted No. 16 Miami to a 68-66 Big East Conference triumph over the 22nd-ranked Huskies as the teams played another magnificent game to the wire.

Two free throws by the Huskies' Taliek Brown evened the game at 66-66 with 22 seconds remaining but Connecticut (14-5, 6-2 Big East East) made a fatal mistake in trying to press Miami (19-3, 6-3). The Hurricanes found a wide-open Tyler under the basket and he put them ahead.

On its final play, Connecticut went to freshman guard Ben Gordon, whose 3-pointer was long with four seconds remaining. The rebound rolled around on the floor and time expired as Miami players came off the bench to celebrate the victory, similar to the way the Huskies did in the first meeting.

John Salmons led Miami with 20 points and Tyler chipped in 16. The Hurricanes prevailed despite a sub-par outing from leading scorer Darius Rice, who finished with just six.
