WR Has Big News

Last week you had a chance to read about Sarasota (Fla.) Booker star receiver Sam Shields. The talented receiver will be among the state's top overall prospects this coming season. He checked in with an update.

"We had a track meet and I ran a 10.8 in the 100, a 22.7 in the 200, and we ran a 42.7 in the 4x1," Shields said. "Those are all electronic times."

At 6-0 and 180 pounds, Shields uses that big time speed to dominate opposing defensive backs. He's hoping to prove that later this spring.

"I signed up for the MSL Combine on April 23 at Florida," he said. "I'm looking forward to that."

Shields also has big news on the recruiting front. He picked up his fifth written scholarship offer recently and it comes from a big time program.

"I got an offer in the mail from Miami yesterday," he said. "It came in a big envelope, saying how I had a full scholarship for all my tuition, books, and stuff like that. That's the one I wanted. Miami's definitely on top. It's looking real good for them right now."

Shields says he's also considering Florida State, Florida, Virginia Tech, and LSU. However, the Canes will likely be tough to beat.

"I definitely like Miami the most," he said. "They're on top -- without a doubt. I grew up a Florida State fan and really like the way they use their receivers in that offense but Miami's where I wanna be."

Shields will spend spring break with good friend Dumaka Atkins, who plays at Florida State, in Tallahassee later this spring.

"I'm gonna check out Miami too sometime," he said.
