Spring Recap: RB Derron Thomas

Derron Thomas had a productive spring showing off good speed, quickness, and elusiveness. Thomas is ready to make his Hurricane debut this season, which begins September 5 against Florida State.

NAME: Derron Thomas
HOMETOWN: Reserve, La.
POSITION: Running Back
YEAR: Freshman

CAREER STATS: 0 tackles

SPRING REVIEW: Thomas was one of the stars of the spring. He was one of three running backs signed in the 2004 class, but the only one that redshirted. Being behind the eight ball, he made the most of his opportunities this spring passing Charlie Jones on the depth chart as the number one back of the spring. He constantly made long runs and hit the holes with superb efficiency.

2005 OUTLOOK: Tyrone Moss will be the starter in 2005 and Thomas appears to have a strong grasp on the backup role. There is no reason to believe he won't be able to produce in games other than the fact that he hasn't done it yet. Look for Thomas to be a threat to score every time he touches the ball--something Miami has not had since Willis McGahee in 2002.

SPRING ARTICLE: "Derron Has New Look"

How was the spring game?

It was real good we just got a chance to come out and let the coaches and fans evaluate us. It was just like another practice to me though.

Who played well in the spring game?

James Bryant, Kyle Wright and the receivers did well. The offensive line struggled a little bit, but they are going to come around. It was just a couple of little mistakes that can be fixed.

How is James Bryant adjusting to fullback?

He is real good. He comes in here with an aggressive attitude. He brings a lot to the offense, something we have not had for a couple years. He is going to be a real help to the offense this year.

How was spring practice for you?

I thought it was good. I had a pretty good spring. The team had a real good spring, the offensive line is young and has some injuries, but by the time August comes and everyone is healthy we will be all right.

Did this spring give you more confidence?

It boosted it a lot. I was just working hard. That was my goal; to just come in here and earn playing time with the ones.

How are the offensive linemen looking?

They are a little hurt right now. We have about four offensive linemen who did not play today who is probably going to be starting against FSU. As a whole we have the second team with the first team and the third team bumped up with the second so they are going to be ok.

What do you want to improve this off-season?

Maybe just getting quicker and being able to get in there and use my vision. I need to improve getting to the hole and making one cut and going north and south with it. I want to get stronger, faster, and learn even more. I just want to be better than I was in the spring.

Are you staying for the summer?

I am going to be here for the whole summer.

When does summer start?

Summer school starts May 18.
