Scarlet Knights Upset Canes

Jerome Coleman made eight three-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points as Rutgers upset No. 13 Miami-Florida 64-61. The Scarlet Knights (17-8, 7-5 Big East) stopped a five-game losing streak to the Hurricanes and beat their fourth top 25 team this season.

Ricky Shields scored 17 points for Rutgers. The Knights have won six in a row at home and are 14-1 at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Coleman hit 8-of-16 from behind the line to tie the Rutgers single game record for made three-pointers.

Darius Rice had 21 points for Miami (21-5, 8-5) and John Salmons added 14.

Turnovers plagued the Hurricanes to start the second half as Rutgers built the lead to 40-32.

Whenever Miami started to come close, Coleman was there with a trey to slow them down. He buried a long range shot to keep a nine-point advantage for Rutgers.

The lead was still nine with under a minute to play, but a three-pointer by Rice brought Miami within 61-57 with 25.7 seconds left.

Coleman made 3-of-4 free throws while Miami scored two baskets and the 'Canes trailed by three with 9.6 seconds left. Rice took an off-balance three-pointer from the top of the key with two defenders on him that bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Rutgers hit the Hurricanes hard to start the game, showing it will be hard to win at the RAC. The Knights jumped out to a 12-3 lead, but Miami kept its composure and came back to make it 15-13.

Miami took its first lead at 22-21 with 3:47 remaining in the half. Coleman hit an extreme long-range three-pointer from the top of the key to give Rutgers a 31-28 lead at the break.

Coleman had 15 points for Rutgers at intermission.
