Freshman Leads Irish Upset

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Freshman guard Chris Thomas tied a career-high with 32 points, while handing out 12 assists, as Notre Dame earned a tough 90-77 road win over the 17th-ranked Miami-Florida Hurricanes. The Fighting Irish (19-8, 9-5 Big East) ended a three-game losing streak to Miami.

Thomas, who scored 22 points in the second half, also grabbed six rebounds as the Irish moved to 8-3 on the road while inching closer to earning an NCAA tournament bid. Thomas, who played all 40 minutes, converted all 10 free throws and made six three-pointers.

David Graves scored 18 points and Torrian Jones added 17 for Notre Dame, while Ryan Humphrey contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Darius Rice scored 23 points for the Hurricanes (21-6, 8-6), who lost for just the second time in 15 home games this season. James Jones added 21 in the loss.

With Notre Dame holding a 71-63 lead, Thomas drained a three-pointer with 6:13 to play to increase Notre Dame's lead to 74-63. After the teams exchanged baskets, Thomas hit another three with 4:11 to go for a 79-65 cushion.

Four straight free throws in the final 90 seconds from Thomas sealed the win for the Irish.

Miami held a 20-18 lead midway through the first, but the Irish outscored the Hurricanes 21-14 to claim a 39-34 halftime lead.

The Irish struggled from beyond the arc in the first half, shooting just 2- of-11.
