Super Rising LB Favors UM Early

Coral Gables High School has become very friendly to the University of Miami in recent years. First it was Jonathan Vilma three years ago, then Frank Gore two years ago, followed by Alex Pou this past year. Next up? Meet linebacker Quintero Frierson (pronounced Fryer-son).

At 6-feet and 215 pounds, he's loaded with muscle and heart. I've been watching this kid since his freshman year at Gables and I always said to myself that he looks like the type of player that has a chance to be really special someday. And that day is fast approaching.

"He's a great linebacker," Gables coach Joe Montoya said about the talented athlete. "All he does is make plays for us."

As a sophomore, Frierson had 88 tackles and six sacks. This past season, he finished with 142 tackles and four sacks. He's been named the team's Defensive MVP in each of the last two years.

Blessed with 4.51 speed (timed prior to basketball season and on the track), Frierson has the speed and athletic ability to chase down ballcarriers all over the field.

Frierson, who plans on attending the NIKE Training Camp at UM on April 7, says he's been following the hometown Hurricanes for a long time.

"Miami's always had a great program," he said. "They always seem to have good linebackers. Plus I'm tight with Vilma, Gore, Pou, and all of them. Miami's my top choice right now."

Frierson says he will consider some others as well.

"I've been to Ohio State before for a wrestling camp and I like the community," he said. "I like them and also North Carolina State and Auburn."

When he's not dominating on the football fields, Frierson is lighting up the basketball courts. He was a wrestler during his younger days, and he also throws the shot put during track season. He threw it just under 45 feet as a sophomore.

So as spring football is fast approaching, especially with some camps just right around the corner, be sure to remember the name Quintero Frierson, as he'll enter spring as one of the state's top defensive prospects.
