"It wasn't really a commitment," Shields said. "I told them that I'm probably coming but that I wanted to take my visits during the season first before I made it official or whatever."
Does that mean Shields did commit and just wants to take more visits? He told us not to list him as a commitment yet.
"I don't consider myself a commitment since there's still a chance I might go somewhere else," he said. "Right now, it just looks real good for Miami. I just got real excited since I spoke to the coaches last night."
Sam Shields showed up at school this morning and later in the morning UM head coach Larry Coker showed up.
"I shook his hand," he said. "He was here talking to my coaches and stuff."
Shields recapped the conversation he had with the UM coaches from Tuesday night.
"They were just telling me how much they want me, how they're gonna be recruiting me, and things like that," he said. "They talked about the school. They've offered me and Richard Jackson so far from Florida. I think they're trying to get two receivers this year but maybe more since they didn't get anyone last year."
Shields has five other programs on his list of current favorites.
"It's pretty much the three (schools) from down here, LSU, Southern Cal, and Pittsburgh," he said. "I spent a whole week in Tallahassee for spring break. I got to hang out with the players, see the school, and things like that. I talked to Coach Les Myles from LSU. If I leave the state, they're my top choice. Southern Cal throws the ball a lot and they've been by the school. Pittsburgh was one of the first schools to offer me."
Shields lists seven written offers at this point in the recruiting process -- Miami, Louisville, Duke, Iowa, Nebraska, South Carolina, and Pittsburgh (listed in that order).
The talented receiver, who qualified for regionals in four different track events but was unable to compete because of a kidney injury (lack of fluids), doesn't have his summer camp plans finalized yet.
"I'm just trying to focus on finishing school and we have our jamboree on Friday night," he said.
In the meantime, Shields is waiting for his SAT results to come back soon.
