Miami KO's Providence

Darius Rice poured in 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, leading the 22nd-ranked Miami-Florida Hurricanes to a 81-65 victory over the Providence Friars. James Jones added 13 points for the Hurricanes (22-6, 9-6 Big East), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Miami shot 56 percent from the floor and sank 16-of-18 free throws.

John Linehan was the lone highlight of the game for Providence (15-14, 6-9), which has dropped three of its last four. Linehan had four steals in the opening half to surpass former Friar Eric Murdock (1987-91) as the NCAA all- time leader with 377. He added one more in the second half to bring his record total to 378.

Abdul Mills paced the Friars with 21 points, while Ryan Gomes scored 18.

The Hurricanes stormed out to a 9-2 lead, but the Friars responded with a 9-0 surge, with Gomes scoring four, to take an 11-9 lead with 14:40 left in the opening half.

But Miami battled back to regain the lead. Ahead by three, the Hurricanes went on a 13-4 run, capped by a layup from John Salmons, to build a 33-21 advantage with 7:09 left in the half. Miami pushed its lead to 45-27 at the break.

Elton Tyler had 11 points at the half for the Hurricanes, while Gomes had 10 for Providence.

Miami kept rolling in the second half, opening the frame with an 8-3 spurt to increase its lead to 23 points at 53-30. The Friars got within 55-43 with 12 1/2 minutes to play, but failed to get any closer, as the Hurricanes coasted to the win.
