Canes Have Eyes on LB

There aren't many players in the entire state who were more productive on the field last season than Colin McCarthy.

The talented linebacker prospect finished the season with 163 total tackles, four sacks, and five interceptions on defense. While playing offense, he had 32 receptions for 525 yards and eight scores.

And if the spring were any indication, he's well on his way to another banner season. He was all over the field defensively and took both of his catches for touchdowns (15 and 55).

At 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, McCarthy is a full academic qualifier. That's why he's become such a major prospect.

"A whole bunch of schools called and came by the school last month," McCarthy said. "I had seven or eight coaches call me on the last night (in May) alone. It was pretty crazy."

McCarthy has close to 10 written scholarship offers already.

"Rutgers just sent their offer the other day," he said. "I got them from FAU, FIU, Illinois, USF, and West Virginia too. I talked to Georgia and Georgia Tech the other night and they both seemed real interested and talked about offering."

McCarthy was on the receiving end of May recruiting calls from all three Florida schools as well.

"Florida State called and said they just need to figure out what Ernie Sims is going to do," he said. "They think he's probably going to enter the NFL which would free up an extra scholarship. Florida was down too. They actually offered Riley (Cooper). I also talked to Coach Werner from Miami. He called last week and said don't be upset about not getting an early offer because they're selective with them."

McCarthy realizes the Canes often offer late in the recruiting process.

"Miami didn't offer AJ (Trump) until midway through his senior season," he said. "They were recruiting him early like they are with me so I just gotta keep working hard, that's all."

McCarthy lists a top four of the three Florida schools and Auburn.

"I'm trying to get to Auburn's mini camp but I gotta see how that's gonna turn out," he said. "I'm going to the Rutgers camp at Middleton (High School)."

McCarthy has a couple teammates who are also being recruited by Miami and many others -- safety Riley Cooper and offensive lineman Kevin Young. I'll have interviews with them posted soon. combine numbers: 6-1 1/2, 208, 4.60/40, 4.31/shuttle, 36/vj, 9-5 broad jump

McCarthy is listed at No. 14 on my post-spring Hot 100 list.
