One and Out

Missouri made a statement right from the start. No. 12 Missouri scored the game's first 12 points and was never threatened, rolling to a 93-80 triumph over fifth-seeded Miami in the opening round of the West Region. Clarence Gilbert had five points, Rickey Paulding drained a 3-pointer and Arthur Johnson and Travon Bryant scored easy baskets as Missouri dominated right from the start.

The Tigers, who finished sixth in the Big 12 Conference, were in control throughout against the team that had the third best record in the Big East.

"Our kids really worked hard," Missouri coach Quin Snyder said. "I think they are anxious to keep playing."

"Coach wanted us to go out and be together, play together and play hard," Gilbert said. "That's what we did."

Missouri (22-11) was up by as much as 14 in the opening half and led 38-30 at the half. The Tigers scored six of the first seven points to open the second half and were able to cruise over the final 20 minutes.

Gilbert finished with 20 and Paulding had 16 for Missouri, which will face Ohio State in the second round.

Darius Rice and Elton Tyler led Miami (24-8) with 17 points apiece.

"Miami is a heckuva team, a very talented team," Snyder said. "I think this will be our best effort of the season."

After the 12-0 run to start the game, Miami finally got on the board on a jumper by John Salmons. The Hurricanes got within 12-5 but Missouri answered with seven straight points and took a 19-5 lead on a jumper by Kareem Rush with 13:59 left.

Miami attempted to get back in the contest with a 13-4 run. Tyler and Marcus Barnes had 3-pointers in the spurt, which was capped by a layup by Rice. But Gilbert and Johnson had baskets 40 seconds apart to extend Missouri's lead to 11.

Two free throws by Rice and another 3-pointer by Barnes got Miami within 29-23 but Gilbert answered with a 3-pointer and Wesley Stokes added two free throws.

Miami was just 9-of-30 from the field, including 3-of-12 from 3-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.

Trailing 38-30 at the half, Missouri opened the second half on a 6-1 run that Rush capped with a 3-pointer. It was his only 3-pointer of the contest.

Miami never got the deficit under double digits the rest of the way.

Missouri held a 48-39 rebounding edge and were 7-of-17 from 3-point range. The Hurricanes made just 6-of-23 attempts beyond the arc.

The Tigers had all five starters and Stokes score in double figures. Bryant added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Missouri.

"I think we were fortunate to get this effort from our kids at this time," Snyder added.

Rice and fellow starting forward James Jones combined to shoot 6-of-27 from the field.

It was the first meeting between the teams.
