"We've put in a lot of time and hard work over the last several months," Johnson said. "It's time we go out and make it happen. Our first game is next Friday night but we've been having some scrimmages and stuff. We're looking good."
Stafon Johnson, who ran for 1,879 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior last season, will again go both ways for L.A. (Calif.) Dorsey H.S.
"I'm mostly playing running back but I play spot time on defense," he said. "In big games or key situations I'm in there."
Johnson, 6-feet and 200 pounds, finished last season with 25 tackles and three sacks. It's on offense, however, that he sees his future.
"My work ethic and my vision, that's something normal people don't have," he said. "I think I have good lower body strength and my size/speed/agility combination is pretty good."
The talented running back prospect, who says he's already a full academic qualifier (2.8/940), has become one of the nation's most heavily recruited running backs.
While seven programs sit on his current list of favorites -- Southern Cal, California, Tennessee, Florida, Miami, Michigan, and Oklahoma -- he's not ready to single anyone out yet.
"My number one goal is to win a championship," he said. "It's plain and simple. Recruiting takes a back seat. I don't wanna be the guy at home telling people about all my yards or scholarships while watching other guys play for a title."
Johnson, who says he lives approximately three minutes from USC's campus, claims offers from all of those schools. He spoke more about Miami.
"I've never been there but it's Miami," he said. "No complaints. They put people in the NFL and that's the big thing. If you're a running back and you do your homework you'll put Miami on the list if you wanna play in the league. Miami's actually recruiting me on both sides of the ball. If I play defense it'll be at safety. Since I've never been there, I might take a visit to check it out but nothing's final yet. I don't know of any visits yet."
While many believe Johnson will likely stay out west, he said distance won't be a factor.
"I got no problem leaving and doing what's best for me," he said. "There are a lot of good opportunities out there."
