Lockerroom Report

Immediately following the season opening loss to Florida State Monday night, some guys offered their thoughts on the game in the locker room.

OL Eric Winston

On the resiliency of Kyle Wright making his first start...
"I have never seen someone take so many shots and keep getting back up. There were a couple times I didn't think he was getting back up. He was taking shots left, right, up the middle, under the chin--that guy is a warrior. He is going to go out there and lay it on the line for 60 minutes just like the rest of us. I will do everything I can to protect him."

On the reason for the struggles of the offensive line...
"It is hard to say. It was a combination of bad technique. A couple times we just got beat, which is going to happen. They are good too, they are on scholarship too over there. We just have to get better in various situations."

On how to respond to the loss...
"Go win at Clemson. That is the only thing we can do. I said at the beginning of the year is that this game was not win or lose and the season is over. It was a big game and it was the first game. The 1983 team won the national title and they got shalacked by Florida. I think we know how good we can be and we have to go out there and do it."

DB Brandon Meriweather

On the flow of the game...
"On defense I think we started off too slow. We came out there over anxious and was making mental mistakes. We made mistakes that we should not have made since we are a veteran group. Then we slowed it down and everyone was playing like they should."

On the ability of the defense to contain the FSU passing game...
"I think we were able to throw a lot of different looks at them and apparently it worked."

On personal performance in the game finishing with seven tackles, a fumble recovery, and always around the ball...
"I didn't do enough. They won."

On if everyone on the team feels the same way about their personal performance...
"If they don't they don't need to be on our team. Even if you only played one play, you should feel like you didn't do enough for that one play. Every play you have to give it your all. We didn't, that is why we got beat."

On what is next for this team and the mentality to turn things around...
"I don't know how we are going to turn out. I think we should meet as a group, get focused, then come back out ready so that we won't start slow again. We should have known that was going to happen because that is what happens in practice. We start out slow in practice and we pick it up at the end. That is not how we should play if we are trying to be the number one defense in the nation."

DE Thomas Carroll

Thoughts on the game...
"It was a wonderful game on both sides. We just came up short. They are going to have a pretty good team this year. This loss does not put us out of goals for the year. I heard the other day that at the beginning of the year there are about 10-15 teams that can actually contend for the championship. What differentiates what team wins the title is character. And I really think we have a lot of character on our team. I hope that we get to see them again."

On the expectations to bounce back...
"The reality is that it is a long season and this was the first game. If we carry the weight of this loss on our shoulders the whole time, then it is going to weigh us down. You can't carry baggage with you into the next game. After we go over the film we will leave it in the past and work on Clemson."

On the play of the defensive line and the ability to be in on a lot of plays...
"We were getting a lot of penetration, but we still should have made more plays. We should have gotten a couple more sacks and put more pressure on him. But it is over now."
