DB Gets UM Offer

Chavez Grant is used to being thrown away from. Teams learned their lesson last season when Grant emerged as one of the top defensive backs in Dade County. The Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington standout is playing well so far this season after having faced two of Dade County's top passing attacks.

"I played against Tim Brown in the Kickoff Classic," Grant said. "I made some plays and he made some plays. I gotta give it to him, he's a good player but he didn't do anything big. Last week, I got an interception against HML (led by returning All-Dade QB Thaddeus Lewis) and he only threw to my side three times. They caught a little hitch on me and that's it."

Chavez Grant, who has one interception and just four catches against him this season through two games, is starting to see things pick up on the recruiting front.

"It's starting to get going again because the coaches have started calling again," he said. "UM called last week, I talked to them. I got their offer in the mail. I got them from Georgia, Duke, UM, and South Florida now. Some other people are calling, too. Colorado called, Duke, Indiana, a bunch of them."

The talented cornerback prospect, 5-10 and 175 pounds, said he's not really been focusing too much on the recruiting process.

"I'm trying to stay focused on our season," he said. "I haven't gotten into all the recruiting stuff a whole lot yet. I'm still keeping my options open. UM, they're close and they have a great program. I like the coaches. Georgia, I like the coaches there and they've turned into one of the top teams. I also like South Carolina with Steve Spurrier."

Grant, a full academic qualifier, hasn't scheduled any official visits yet but those three will likely get visits. He talked about the UM/FSU game from Monday night.

"Both defenses played pretty good," he said. "UM locked down the receivers. They just need to get the offense going a little bit. It was a good game."
