Locker Room Report vs USF

Miami defeated South Florida 27-7 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Following the game we caught up with some of the players to get their thoughts on the victory.

CB Devin Hester

[On holding the USF offense to 174 total yards and 7 points]
"We wanted to get the shutout today, but when you set a high goal like that--even if you don't accomplish it--you still come out on top. We are glad to come away with the win even if we aren't shutting them out or blowing them out--that is just how it goes sometimes."

[On the interception and 29-yard return down to the 3-yardline]
"We were playing a 'cover-2' and just tried to stay inside my man and not let him release to the outside. He ran a down-and-in and it came off someone's hand and tried to get my hands on the ball. When I got it, I tried to score."

[On the 28-yard punt return that gave the offense a 1st-and-10 from the USF 19-yardline]
"I just tried to find my holes like I always do. I have to give it to the special teams for their solid blocking. They came out and made big plays for me."

LB Leon Williams

"I thought the defense did well. We made a play or two and we held them from scoring very many points."

[On his personal performance and starting at MLB] "A lot of guys rotated in, but I did get to play a lot. Any plays close to me, I try to make them."

[On facing Duke next week]
"We will come in and look at tape to see what we need to improve on. Then we'll prepare for the game throughout the week in practice."

DE Bryan Pata

[On the defensive line performance]
"I think we showed we could pass rush today. All of the guys came in and put pressure on the quarterback. We were able to get some sacks and a lot of pressure."

[On focusing on USF RB Andre Hall]
"We knew they were going to come in and try to pound the ball. Once we slowed them down early, they didn't want to run the ball any more."

[On facing Duke next week]
"Week by week we try to hold our opponents the best we can. On defense we try to get the donut (zero points), unfortunately we did not get it this week, but we'll try again next week."

K Jon Peattie

[On making both field goals he attempted]
"It feels good getting back on the right track. We had a new snapper (Ross Abramson) and Brian (Monroe) did a good job holding. We were saying we would go 100 percent and we did."

[On the overall performance of special teams in all areas]
"We have really put an emphasis on special teams and it showed. It really showed this week. We wanted to step it up another level after last week."

[On the 49-yard field goal]
"If felt great. When you get a good snap and a great hold, it makes everything easier. I saw the ball before I kicked it and as a kicker when you can see the ball for a good amount of time before you kick it, then you know you are going to have a good hit. I was able to see it and the ball was down really fast. The hardest part is the snap and the hold."
