Local DB Talks Recruiting

Chavez Grant his his Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington teammates are on a mission. Armwood stopped them in the playoffs a season ago and they're doing whatever it takes for that to be prevented this season.

"We're really focused right now," Grant said. "We're 5-0 and I really like where we're at. We worked real hard all summer. Everyone needs to forget about last year and stay focused, just one game at a time."

Chavez Grant, 5-10 and 170 pounds, hasn't been tested a whole lot early in the season.

"Teams aren't throwing my way very much this year," he said. "We played Northwestern in the Classic and they threw to Tim Brown some but there hasn't been much. It's kinda frustrating but then again, I know that my teammates are gonna get the job done too."

The talented cornerback, who has two picks so far this season, has been enjoying the recruiting process.

"It's been fun," he said. "It's keeping me busy. I'm going up to Ole Miss with Joseph Jackson this weekend. I wanna see what it's like because I've really enjoyed talking to their coaches this year and I've become very interested in them. We're gonna check it out and see what it's like. They signed some guys from down here last year and they're recruiting a bunch more this year."

In addition to Ole Miss, Grant is still interested in several others right now.

"There's UM, Georgia, South Carolina, and some others," he said. "Georgia's having a great year. They have a lot of tradition. South Carolina has been recruiting me pretty hard. Steve Spurrier's a great coach, a guy a lot of people wanna play for."

The hometown Hurricanes are also on that short list of favorites. He talked more about that.

"UM is close to home," he said. "I like Coach Shannon a lot. They're playing a lot of young guys on defense right now and that's something you notice. They're putting guys into the league a lot too."

Grant, who claims written offers from all four of those programs, has not yet scheduled any other visits. He'll most likely take them after the season.

"I'll make my decision after my visits are over," he said. "A lot of people are coming at me and I'm hearing a lot of different things so these visits will be used to see where I fit in the best at."
