Randy Phillips Q&A

Freshman CB Randy Phillips missed three games earlier this season, but made a big play in his return when he intercepted a pass against North Carolina and returned it 55 yards. This week, he hopes to have similar success against Wake Forest.

How has your knee been feeling?

"It is feeling pretty good. I will get to take off my knee brace after this game."

With CB Kelly Jennings (concussion) and CB Devin Hester (hamstring) battling injuries, can you talk about your role this week againt Wake Forest?

"I have neen running with the ones this week in practice. Kelly is a little nicked up, but he should be ready for the game. If not, my role will be the same. Whenever someone goes down, then they will put me in."

How has your freshman season been going?

"It is going pretty good. I got Marcus Maxey, who is like a big brother to me, showing me different things. He is staying on me. It feels good to be a part of the number one defense in the nation."

Maxey has been your mentor since you have been here, when did that connection start?

"Maxey was my host on my visit. Ever since then I would call him when I was home and we would talk. We are kind of like the same type of person. We both keep to ourselves. When two people connect like that, we would just kick it and we became friends. He would just show me everything he knows. That really helped me a lot and it put me in the position where I am right now."

Your playing style and toughness seems very similar to Maxey's, do you think it is?

"All of the corners are alike except for me and Maxey. We are a little bit more aggressive. We are the more rowdy, out-going type. The other corners are the laid-back, smooth-type corners. They are straight up smooth cover guys."

You recorded a number of interceptions during fall practices, but how have you adjusted to cornerback from your natural position at safety?

"I am pretty much good at the line. I am just focusing on being better at covering my guy. I got a lot of interceptions in the fall, but I am working on being closer to the ball. I am just working on the deep ball and with my speed."

Randy Phillips has played in four games this season and has recorded seven tackles (all solo), one interception, and one fumble recovery.
