DL Talks About UM Commitment

Steven Wesley had nearly a dozen scholarship offers heading into his senior season at Bartow High. The talented defensive end was getting weekly phone calls from major programs from around the country.

"It started fast and never stopped," Wesley said. "I felt as if I was getting calls from pretty much everyone. The offers were coming and everything."

Some college programs wanted to see the first few games of his senior season before making a decision.

"A lot of coaches talked about that," he said. "I wanted to go out and start strong for my senior year and I feel like I did that."

About midway through the season, Wesley got good news from the University of Miami. He found out the Canes were ready to offer him a scholarship. After a couple months of phone calls and and an in-home visit with some UM coaches, Wesley decided to end the recruiting process by committing to the Hurricanes.

"I just felt like it was the best situation for me," he said. "I grew up rooting for Miami and teams from Florida. I look at Miami and I see a defense that plays with a lot of swagger and confidence. They seem like they're well coached and they play with a lot of speed on defense. That fits my style. I always thought I'd fit in well."

Steven Wesley had an in-home visit with UM coach Tim Walton over the weekend and that sealed the deal.

"I'm going down there for my official visit this weekend," he said. "I really liked Alabama and Ole Miss and even Ohio State but I feel like this is the best situation for me. It's something I've always wanted."

The talented senior, who has already received passing test scores, has cancelled his remaining visit to Florida.

"Now I need to hit the weights hard and begin training," he said. "I know playing time isn't gonna be easy and I'm really gonna have to be prepared. I like competition and I feel like I'll be in a good situation."

Wesley, 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, finished his senior season with 70 tackles and 10 sacks.
