Two years ago, the University of Miami coaches landed a huge summer commitment from one of the top prospects in north Florida when they stole cornerback Kelly Jennings away from the hometown Gators. This year UM is back at Live Oak Suwannee H.S. recruiting running back Lyn Gross, even though the main competition right now doesn't appear to be Florida.
At 5-foot-11 ½ and 195 pounds, Gross has 4.46 speed and he used it to rush for over 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior last season.
Gross also competes in basketball and track. He ran a 10.9 100m time this past track season and also does the 200m, long jump, and 4x1.
Inside the classroom, Gross carries a 2.8 GPA and is awaiting test score results. While he's waiting on them, college coaches haven't been waiting around.
"Florida State called, Miami called, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Florida, there were a lot of them," he said. "I don't have any scholarship offers yet, but I think they're waiting for my test scores."
Gross did offer up an early list of favorites.
"My top choices right now would be Florida State, Miami, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee," he said. "My two favorites right now would probably be Florida State and Georgia."
Gross said the Hurricanes are definitely under consideration, however.
"I've always liked Miami," he said. "That's just a place that I have always thought about going. Coach Soldinger called and said how they like me and all that. He said I'm pretty high on their list of running backs. I think they might be close to offering, but they'll probably wait till the season starts. I'm also good friends with Kelly [Jennings] and we have stayed in touch."
Gross, who lives about 85 miles from Tallahassee, said the Noles are probably the team to beat right now.
"They were always my team growing up," he said. "They said they're close to offering me too. They like me as a linebacker too. I'm going to their camp for sure and I might also go to Auburn's."
Personally, it sounds like Gross is pretty high on Florida State right now, but if UM offers then that might change some things. The only question is, how much would it change?
