Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead when RF Tommy Giles hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season.
Following the Giles home run CF Jon Jay reached base with a double and 3B Danny Valenica drew a walk before 1B Yonder Alonso hit a three-run home run to the opposite field as Miami led 4-0 after the first inning.
"My first pitch was a change-up away and I thought, 'if they are going to throw me more change-ups and more curve balls I might as well make an adjustment and try to drive it the other way especially with this field today. The wind was blowing 15-20 miles per hour out'," said Alonso, as he hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season and second of the series.
In addition to adding to his RBI total--now 57--Alonso made two great defensive plays in the game when he made two over-the-head catches down the first-base line.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense here. We always practice that every day," Alonso said. "If you take a great first-step, you are pretty much going to catch the ball and that is what (the coaches) have pretty much taught me. I give them all the credit."
"I thought Yonder had two very good drop-steps, which we have been working on in the past couple of weeks, and made two very good plays," Miami head coach Jim Morris said. "Obviously the home run was big and it opened up the game a little bit at that point."
RHP Carlos Gutierrez (9-5) allowed just one hit in five innings while striking out three batters. With a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth Gutierrez loaded the bases before getting a groundout to end the inning.
"I felt good. Like I said before I just wanted to come out here and use this game to hit my spots and work on my mechanics--and I did that," said Gutierrez, who lowered his ERA to 3.43 on the season. "Getting ahead with my fastball is pretty much my bread and butter. Once I have that I knew I could get my other pitches in and control the game."
RHP Jon McLean and RHP Marcelo Albir allowed just one run in the final four innings as the Miami bullpen has a 1.42 ERA in the first two games of the series.
While Wright State was unable to cut into the lead during the fifth inning, the Hurricanes responded with three runs of their own as they led 8-0.
SS Roger Tomas continued his hot streak with three hits and is batting .476 (10-for-21) in his last five games.
"It is just confidence I guess," Tomas said. "There is not much that has changed. I take the same amount of 'BP'. I am seeing the ball a little bit better and I am just taking opportunities when they come."
Miami LHP Manny Miguelez (5-4, 3.92 ERA) and Wright State RHP Chris Snyder (3-5, 4.76 ERA) are the probable starters for tomorrow's 12:00 p.m. contest as the Hurricanes go for their first sweep since March 17-19 against Duke.
"We have to understand that every game is big right now," Morris said.
Notes: The Hurricanes were hit by a pitch a school-record seven times in the game...The 14 runs were the most scored since March 10 and only twice this season have they scored more runs...RHP Marcelo Albir recorded his first career at-bat when he struck out in the eighth inning...3B Danny Valencia had three RBI after missing last night's game due to a violation of team rules.
