CWS: Rice Scouting Report

OMAHA, Neb. -- Rice has an overall record of 56-11, the best record for the Owls since 1985 (54-7). Of the 11 losses, 8 are to teams who made the NCAA tournament this season and 4 of the losses were to the two most-recent CWS champions.

With several lefty hitters in the Canes lineup, LHP Cole St. Clair is expected to get the start for the Rice Owls. St. Clair is a fastball pitcher who throws the heat (low 90's) about 9 out of 10 pitches. Rice is 38-3 dating back to March 25 with a loss to ranked Houston and two losses to ranked Oklahoma.

3B Josh Rodriguez (2nd round draft pick to Cleveland Indians)

Rodriguez is batting .348 on the season with 20 doubles, 11 home runs, and 64 RBI's. In the NCAA tournament alone he has hit .393 (11-for-28) with 11 RBI's and 3 home runs. Rodriguez drove in 5 RBI's on 3 hits including 1 home run against Oklahoma in the final game of the Super Regional to advance to the CWS.

CF Tyler Henley

Henley leads the team with 26 doubles and 73 runs scored. He is batting .336 on the season and hot as of late. During post-season play Henley is batting .407 (11-for-27) with 6 doubles, 5 walks, and has been hit-by-pitches 3 times. Henley has great defensive range and covers a lot of ground in the outfield.

SS Brian Friday

Friday is batting .367 on the season with 22 doubles and 57 RBI's. He leads the team with 17 stolen bases. His post-season play hasn't been as well hitting just .259 (7-for-27) but has already gotten hot at the CWS. Friday went (2-4) against Georgia on Saturday with a single and a double. He had one RBI, and scored the tying run in the 7th inning.

1B/LHP Joe Savery

Savery leads the Owls with 65 RBI's and 49 walks. He is hitting .343 on the season and .455 (10-for-22) during post-season play with 2 home runs and 8 RBI's, including a go-ahead 2 RBI double against Georgia on Saturday.

LF Aaron Luna

Luna is one of the top freshman players in the country. He is batting .318 on the season and leads the team with 16 home runs, including 2 grand slams. Luna began his career hitting home runs on his first 3 plate appearances for the Owls.

STARTING PITCHER LHP Cole St. Clair (6-2, 1.95)

St. Clair has made 36 appearances on the season and only made one start. He has been the primary closer for the Owls compiling 11 saves on the season. With several lefty batters in the Canes line-up, the south-paw St. Clair is expected to get the start. St. Clair averages less than 2 innings pitched per appearance however did throw 5.1 innings against Oklahoma in the final game of the Super Regional where he picked up the win. He is 2nd among NCAA leaders on strike outs per nine innings with 12.2/game. St. Clair faced 2 batters against Georgia on Saturday throwing 5 pitches.

IN THE BULLPEN

RHP Craig Crow (8-1, 3.28), (11th round draft pick to Texas Rangers)

Crow's opponents are hitting .263 on the season. In 79.2 innings pitched, Crow has thrown 12 wild pitches. During the NCAA tournament Crow made 2 starts for a combined 4.1 innings surrendering 7 earned runs for an ERA of 14.54.

RHP Bobby Bell (8-0, 4.12)

Bell has not lost a game in his 2 seasons with the Owls (12-0). He has 3 saves on the season in 6 out of the bullpen appearances. Bell has pitched 72.0 innings and given up 6 home runs against 278 batters.

RHP Bryce Cox (5-1, 4.03), (3rd round draft pick to Boston Red Sox)

Cox has a record of 5-1 after his 33 pitch outing in 2.2 innings against Georgia on Saturday where he picked up the win. His opponents are hitting .229 (38-for-166) with 9 54 strike outs and 25 walks. Cox has allowed just 11 hits and 1 run in his last 21.1 consecutive innings.
