KP Looking for Encore Performance

After a three-interception game against Duke, sophomore safety Kenny Phillips wants another big performance.

Kenny Phillips' three interceptions earned him ACC defensive back of the week honors after he became the first UM player since 1988 to record the feat.

"That is great. It is a really good accomplishment," Phillips said. "I just went out there trying to do my job and help the team win. It feels really good that I got three picks.

Phillips played some cornerback against Duke, something he has done previously at UM.

"At first I was a little nervous because that was the first time I was playing corner in a game," Phillips said.

At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Phillips could be matched up against Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 235 pounds.

"I look at it as an opportunity because he is supposed to be one of the best receivers out there," said Phillips of the potential matchup. "I'm real competitive so I wouldn't mind going up against him.

"He is great athlete. He has nice hands, nice speed, and is a really big target."

Through 7 games, Johnson has 35 receptions, 559 yards, and 8 touchdowns.

"Counting on one guy to beat us is not going to work," said Phillips as UM's pass defense ranks 55th in the country allowing 195 yards a game.

Phillips doesn't anticipate going up against Johnson very often, but thinks he matches up well against him.

"I think I matchup pretty well," Phillips said. "He can jump, I can jump. He's tall, I'm tall. He's got me by a couple of inches."

Phillips leads the team in tackles (40) and interceptions (4).
