Atkins Has Best Game of '06

Baraka Atkins had his best game of the season against Georgia Tech last week, recording two sacks, three tackles for a loss and five tackles in the game.

"Baraka Atkins had his best game of the year last week against Georgia Tech," coach Larry Coker said. "I hope it is a springboard for him for the rest of the season because that is what we need from him."

Atkins freely admits that this season has not turned out the way he would like, assessing his play this season as "sub-par" but the Georgia Tech game is a good start for him to get his play back on track.

"That type of game is definitely something I have been expecting of myself and I have not got to it this season up to this point," Atkins said. "I think I am taking a step forward and taking a step in the right direction."

Atkins currently has 21 tackles, six tackles for a loss, and three sacks on the year.

Miami allowed its first 100-yard rusher this season versus Georgia Tech, with Tashard Choice gaining 107 yards on 26 carries, but the defense still ranks first in the ACC, allowing 65 yards rushing per game.

Though this season will likely not reap a BCS bowl game for UM this year, Atkins believes the ‘Canes still have a lot to play for.

"This season has definitely been unacceptable for us and what I wanted," Atkins said. "We have definitely not accomplished everything that we have wanted to. My first objective is to win, and since we have lost a few games, that is unfortunate."
