Practice Update - August 13th

The Hurricaces looked very good today and we have updates from practice from special teams to who the playmakers were today. We also have an update on the injury situation including Andre Johnson who was forced to miss practice today. We update his condition as well as others and have some quotes from coach Coker on their status. Brett Romberg was also out, however it was not due to an injury.

HIGH MARKS

The Hurricanes special team units enjoyed a good practice and the overall condition of the players has been a major factor in camp, said Coker after the two-hour morning practice.

The practice consisted of the team working in groups with position coaches and concluded with 11-on-11 drills. In between, the special teams ‘also got in a lot of work' in the sweltering heat.

"We got in a lot of special teams work," said Coker. "We expect to be good on special teams and although we still have a lot of decisions to make we have some athletes that are going to help us in that area."

MAKING THE PLAYS

Sophomore safety Sean Taylor had several pass break-ups during the offense/defensive drills that ended the morning session ... Quarterback Ken Dorsey looked sharp for most of the drills…Freshmen receiver Sinorice Moss showed good form while catching a pair of slant passes from back-up quarterback Derrick Crudup. Both times Moss was tackled by sophomore defensive back Antrel Rolle…Running back Willis McGahee drew several groans from the crowd with a burst through the right side of the offensive line after a cutback move in the backfield…Crudup unable to avoid a defensive rush on occasion and having to hang on to the ball ... The defensive-line showed good penetration for most of the practice ... Coker signaled out linebacker Carl Walker for a 'standout performance.'

Coker praised Taylor.

"Although he's not a great football player yet, Sean has it all," said Coker. "He has good hands, good size, speed and the instincts to play this game. It's just a matter of time with him."

INJURY RAP

Running back Jarrett Payton (back spasms), defensive end Jerome McDougle (strained pectoral muscle), defensive end Andrew Williams (knee), longsnapper Chris Harvey (knee), Ryan Moore (knee), fullback Kyle Cobia (knee), offensive lineman Alex Pou (knee) and receiver Andre Johnson (leg cramps, dehydration) all sat out practice Tuesday morning.

Additionally, center Brett Romberg was taking a GRE examination – for entrance into graduate school- and also missed the morning session. Anderson (dehydration, stomach ailment) has been in the hospital since Saturday afternoon, although Coker said he might be released by tonight.

"Larry hasn't been able to hold down anything in his stomach. We're obviously all concerned," Coker said.

Coker termed Johnson ‘doubtful' for the next several days after he suffered the cramps yesterday.
