It was clear that limiting Rios' offensive arsenal was at the forefront of Norland's game plan as they earned a 46-45 victory over Miami High on Saturday night.
"The fact they kept rotating players got me pretty tired pretty early in the season so im not used to that much pressure so soon" said Rios of the smothering Vikings back court. "I think I should've hit more shots and my teammates should've stepped up a little bit more. They're a good team, played well tonight."
His ability as a natural point guard was evident. Despite a vaunted Viking full court press, he dished out four assists and constantly found open teammates.
"I kind of mix it up," Rios said. "I just do what the defense gives me. If I beat them down then I beat them down. If it's open then I pass it."
As Miami High struggled to score, Rios' game-breaking skills kept them in the game which included scoring six of his teams first eight points. He hit 3-of-6 from beyond the 3-point line.
However, Rios didn't find too many places to navigate.
"Basically they were taking a lot of charges inside," Rios said of the Vikings help-side defense. "I didn't have any spacing so I kind of settled for the jumper."
Norland went on a 13-0 run in the closing minutes of the third quarter to pull ahead.
Rios then applied his own tourniquet as he ended the quarter with four straight points to stop the bleeding.
"I'm used to (the pressure) being a senior. It's second nature."
When asked if he felt extra pressure going into the 4th quarter down one point, Rios replied:
"Not really it's just something I knew I had to do so I did it."
Minutes after his last-second attempt at a game-winner failed, Rios was asked how well he will adjust to basketball at UM.
"Marcus has been using some of the offense so I'm getting used to it," Rios said. "Once I get to UM, I should feel comfortable."
