Taylor Leads Women's Hoops Team

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Renee Taylor scored 17 points to lead the women's basketball team to a 77-50 win over Jackson State.

As the Hurricane players took the floor Friday night, some things surely seemed different. Among those differences, were that the Canes were playing a home game at the Knight Sports Complex for the first time since 2002.

In addition, it was "70's night," the decade that marked the first for the women's hoops program.

"It was fun," said Meier, who earned her 100th career win. "I had a lot of fun tonight too, when we went on that run in the second half the crowd really got into it."

That second half explosion that Meier was referring to was actually a carry over from the first half. The Canes ended that first half on a 13-2 run over the last 2:57 to make the score 38-32.

The run then continued into the second half as the Canes scored the first 15 points of the second half. UM outscored JSU 39-19 in the half.

Renee Taylor sparked the team in the second half.

"I was wondering how Renee would perform" Meier said. "She really made some great setup moves and counter moves, she out smarted them"

One of those moves, happened to be a jaw-dropping, devastating crossover, at the top of the key accompanied by a step-back three pointer at the 8:15 mark of the second half. The killer crossover left the Jackson State defender lying on the floor.

"I don't really look for the points," Taylor modestly explained.

The team really seemed to enjoy the fan support they received in the glorified high school gym.

"It's always a pleasure to see people come out and watch us play" Taylor said. "Hopefully that support will continue at The BUC"

Taylor was also supported by three other teammates in double figures: Eboni Sadler 13, Maurita Reid 14, and Charmaine Clark 11.
