Recruiting: The latest on Offense

Here's the latest on UM's offensive recruiting efforts.

Quarterbacks: Nick Fanuzzi is still committed but I've heard a few times lately that he'll be taking a couple January visits. Watch out for Michigan State. I'm concerned with UM's chances.

Robert Marve visits next weekend. He's always liked UM but only got a single phone call the first several months. Bama offered him early and he felt right there. I think theyre in the driver's seat but a strong visit here could change things, especially if Fanuzzi backs out and Marve realizes he would be No. 3 at worst on the depth chart next year. Purdue, who will also get a visit, is running third. I spoke to his coach yesterday about him. He's nursing a bad shoulder right now but will be fine soon.

Other QB options are popping up like Mike Johnson from NC and Harland Gunns cousin but I'm not sold on those two.

UM began contacting Cameron Newton recently but he's strongly in Florida's camp, even with the recent commitment of Johnny Brantley.

Running Backs: Landing Cooper was huge. He'll be a factor right away in the return game. One UM coach said he would have done that this year if he had gotten in. Getting a 2nd would be nice but I dont think it's a big priority. They're trying to get Joe McKnight for a visit but it's a longshot that he comes here. Lee Chambers is an outside possibility. He will likely visit later this month. I dont really think Easterling is seriously in the picture. Rutgers looks to be the team to beat there.

Wide receivers: With five commitments, we appear to be in good shape numbers-wise. Kayne can be a kid that can help right away, although missing spring will hurt his chances. Hankerson's a stud with a lot of upside. Same with McKenzie, although he will need a year in the weight room. McKinley and Adderley add numbers. The biggest target here is Deonte. It's a three team race between UM, Florida, and USC. Those two have more to offer so Shannon's recruiting ability will be UM's biggest hope. O'Neal Wilder and Ronnie Tubbs are being watched from Mississippi. Palatkas Josh Miller visits on Super Bowl weekend and remains in the mix. I really think we'll go with what we have plus DT if he wants to come.

Tight Ends: No action going on here.

Offensive linemen: Here's where the head-scratching begins. Gunn is committed and thats a big get. Orlando Franklin is a priority and if he gets along well with UMs new O-Line coach, I think he'll come. Kevin Bryant isnt being recruited anymore. Juco Rodney Brisbon, a Houston commit, is scheduled to visit next weekend and I think his mind could be changed if they wanted to. Obviously, the new OL coach will have his hands full trying to solidify this class and I think new names will emerge, especially ones he was recruiting at Michigan State. I'll be calling those kids over the next few days.
