White-Ready Scores 28 with UMKC Coach at Game

Chris White-Ready has has a lot of big-time performances in his career at Topeka High, but they don't compare to his 28-point, 14-rebound night in a win at Seaman on Tuesday.

Not only did Chris White-Ready showcase his talent in front of a packed Seaman crowd, but also in front of UMKC assistant coach Ken Dempsey.

"It felt real good and it came off of teamwork," said White-Ready, on his third 20-plus point performance of the season. "We ran the ball and I found myself in a position to score a lot. This one felt real good."

White-Ready, a 6-foot-4 forward with a 3.1 GPA and a 19 on the ACT, has been in contact with UMKC throughout the season. The Division I program plays in the Mid-Continent Conference.

"Coach Henson told me before the game that they were here and just told me to go play my game," White-Ready said. "I was mainly worried about the little things like hustling and playing good on defense."

White-Ready was 12-for-18 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line en route to setting a Topeka-best 28 points. His previous high this season was 22.

With the win, Topeka High, ranked fourth in class 6A by the KBCA, improved to 6-1 on the season.

"We are having a blast besides the setback we had at Washburn Rural and everyone believes we should be 7-0 right now," said White-Ready, who leads the team in scoring averaging 16.3 points a game. "We are having a ball averaging over 80 points a game, which is crazy. We are really getting after it on defense and pushing the ball. We feel like we are where we need to be with the T.I.T. coming up."

The Topeka Invitational Tournament begins Jan. 18 with a number of high-caliber teams including Topeka High, Highland Park, Wichita East, Lawrence, and Wichita Northwest.

"It's going to be a big test for us especially with the other top 6A schools there that are not on our schedule and that will be in the state tournament at the end of the year," White-Ready said. "We are excited to see how we match up with some of the other 6A schools."

Topeka High travels to Shawnee Heights (2-5) on Friday. Last year, White-Ready scored a career-high 32 points against the T-Birds.
