Manhattan (6-6) trailed by one heading into the final quarter before Jackie Carmichael scored 11 of his 22 points.
"I was really just trying to get to the basket," Carmichael said. "Coach tells me that I need to shoot a lot more. I just kept on taking it to the basket and either scored or kept getting fouled. I just knew I had to step up and do something, which helped my team and opened everything else up."
Carmichael exploited the Seaman zone from the baseline in the second half after scoring just five in the first half.
"Facing the zone, coach said to just work the low block," Carmichael said. "They would cover it up, but I would just step back and then step back in. Then we had another guy step in and they couldn't guard both of us at the same time. It just worked out for me and I was able to get to the basket."
Carmichael finished 8-for-11 from the floor and 6-of-13 from the free-throw line.
He showed very good quickness in the post for a 6-foot-9, 225-pounder and appears to be growing more confident with his offensive game.
In the second quarter, Carmichael made an outstanding defensive play when he blocked a breakaway layup from behind, which appeared to be a goaltending, but the officials ruled it was clean.
One thing college coaches and scouts will like about Carmichael's game is his ability to take up a lot of ground on his moves to the basket. When he catches the ball on the baseline he doesn't take a lot of wasted dribbles. Instead he gets the ball high and goes right to the basket.
He also will rebound on both ends of the court and will go after the tough ones even if it means he has to chase down a ball by the 3-point line.
Carmichael continues to improve on a daily basis and could find himself into a high-major Division I program with a strong showing this summer.
This season Carmichael is averaging 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks per game.
Next Tuesday, Carmichael will face Chris White-Ready, who recently dropped 40 points on Wichita East and holds an offer to UMKC.
"That is just another challenged that we have to be ready for."
Carmichael carries a 3.5 GPA and is scheduled to take the ACT this spring.
