No. 2 Starter Ready for Senior Season

University of Miami senior pitcher Danny Gil will begin the 2007 as the Saturday starter. Gil, as a right hand pitcher will be sandwiched in between left hand pitchers Manny Miguelez and Scott Maine in a rotation that will go left-right-left during the weekend.

Danny Gil spent the majority of the 2006 season as Miami's primary setup man, but he moved into a starting role in the postseason.

Gil finished the season 4-3 with season career bests of 59 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched and a 2.66 ERA with five starts.

At 6-foot-3, 205 pounds Gil has added about 20 pounds since the end of last season which should help keep his velocity up late in the season and improve his durability.

Maine, Gil, and Miguelez make up one of the best rotation in all of college baseball. All three starters have experience from the 2006 season and have a chance to be drafted high this summer.

"Scott is obviously a great pitcher who has all the tools," Gil said. "Manny is another great pitcher who I think has the best stuff on the team. Once he puts it together he will be un-hittable."

"I knew when I heard he was coming back that it was going to be a huge help for our team. He is a great pitcher who did well last year, so there is no reason he should not do great this year."

Miami will have to depend on primarily freshmen and sophomores in the bullpen this season. However, after seeing the talent of the young, inexperienced players, Gil has full confidence in handing the ball off to his bullpen.

"This year, our pitching looks great, our freshmen are phenomenal—we have young strong arms in the bullpen along with strong hitters and fielders," Gil said. "To me the best freshman pitcher has been Alex Koronis and on the hitting side, it has probably been Ryan Jackson."

"We are a young team, but I think we learned a lot from last season. The sophomores that were freshmen on last year's team have really helped the freshmen on the team this year and I think we will be hitting our stride early this year and be ready to go."
