Spring Practice Report: March 20

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami returned to practice on Tuesday after taking 11 days off for spring break.

"It went okay," coach Randy Shannon said. "It was our first day back and guys flew around a little bit., but we have to get better as a team. We had too many fumbled snaps and gave a couple of big plays on defense that should not have happened."

Shannon's team is scheduled to practice three more times this week including an open scrimmage Saturday at 10 a.m. in Coral Gables that will be open to the public.

STEPPING UP: With senior WR Darnell Jenkins out of spring practices due to personal reasons, there are plenty of opportunities for other players to step up.

Sophomores Sam Shields and Ryan Hill are two guys that have improved since their first season at UM in 2006 as they combined for 45 receptions for 578 yards and four touchdowns.

"They're doing a whole lot better," Shannon said. "It's maturity. It's a more physical game in college. Those guys are starting to turn it on."

MORSE AILING: Senior OL Derrick Morse was limited in Tuesday's practice with a knee injury. Morse, who has been taking a lot of reps at center, is expected to be back soon.

"He'll be fine, he's just a little sore," Shannon said. "He will miss another day or so and then he'll be ready."

With Morse out, Matt Pipho and Andrew Bain have filled in at center.

Offensive linemen Jason Fox, Tyrone Byrd, A.J. Trump, and Ian Symonette are not participating in contact drills this spring.
